5 Books That Inspire My Sense Of Wanderlust

I thought today would be a good day to join in on Belinda’s Blog Everyday in May challenge. Today’s prompt is 5 Books You Love. At first I thought this was a great blog topic. I was super excited about it. I love reading and of course I love sharing my favourite books. Then it came time to picking them. You want me to narrow it done to 5? Just 5? This is not an easy task for a bookworm such as myself. How to choose?
It is Wednesday and usually on Wednesdays we wanderlust. I thought I would combine them because are so many books out there that have feed into my yearning to travel this amazing globe be it to real or imagined places. Books that have me sparked my wanderlust or helped fan the flames of what was already there. Books they have me day dreaming of far off places.

I am going to have to start this of with an obvious one. At least it is obvious to me. Outlander, the whole series. Ok, that may be a bit of stretch since I am still on book three but I have faith. I have always wanted to go to Scotland. Got a bit of Scot in me and the hubby has even more so it is definitely near the top of our travel bucket list.
Through Jamie and Claire’s travels I have also lived in and wandered through the streets of France and we are sailing to the West Indies right now. I can’t wait to read about where we will go next. These books also appeal to my time travel loving heart. The icing on the cake is the TV show. They could not have picked a better guy than Sam Heughan to portray Jamie. It is like he walked straight out of the pages of the book, kilt and all. Swoon.

Now this book truly is Wicked. I am sure by now most of us have already seen and loved the musical. If you haven’t actually read the book/series. You need too. Like drop what you are doing now and download it or go to the library/bookstore. Whatever you have to do to get a copy of this in your hands, then devour it. If you don’t want to go to Oz, I don’t know what to do with you. wink wink
This was the first alternate fairytale type but I read years back. If you have been living under a rock it is based on the life of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Honestly, when I first saw it. I was appalled. I hated her and didn’t want to know why she was wicked or care about it. I just couldn’t understand the point. Don’t F with my fairytales. It was a strict policy. Fortunately, curiosity got the best of me. There was a slight breeze that day and it had cracked open the door to my mind. I picked it up and loved it instantly from the first chapter. It opened a whole new genre of books for me. I actually have another WOZ based story next on my to-read list.
I am pretty sure the cover of this novel is enough to turn anyone off. It just screams trashy romance novel. Maybe it is a little but it is also so much more than that. I actually read this for the first time when I was a teenager. It was my mom’s. ClichĂ©? Totally. I was big into mystery novels at the time but I stepped out of my comfort zone and picked this up for some reason. I have read it many times over the years. I actually ended having to buy a new copy the old one got so used. In my defence it was old when I first got my hands on it.
This book had me wanting to lose myself in the past. It actually sparked my interest in period literature. Michael is of all things a car salesman from modern times and is called back to the reservation because his great-grandfather was dying. He ends up going on a vision quest with him and finds himself lost in time. In the Black Hills of 1876, among a Cheyenne people still thriving wild and free. Discovering a way of life long lost and finding an unexpected love along the way.
Although, I am not afraid to admit I do love this series. I probably wouldn’t normally put it in my Top 5. Unless it was only a YA category. Probably. No promises. Depends on my mood. I am not going to give you a synopsis because seriously you don’t need one. Whether you have read it or not you know the story. I will however have to include it in this list since it is the only book I ever read that actually lead to travel.
My sister, her MIL and I went on a road trip in 2012 to Forks, WA. To do and see all things Twilight. It was silly and amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I blogged about it on my old blog but that is lost my friends. I should probably re-do it because it was an amazing trip without or without being a fan.
This book is incredible. Start to finish. If you haven’t read Me Before You before you should.  I did a full review of it awhile back. If you want to know more about this amazing, unique and heart wrenching love story click here. The reason I am including it on this list is because this book has me lusting after a trip to Mauritius real bad. It seems like I may have to win the lottery to afford it.
There you have it. Five of my favorite books because they inspire my sense of wanderlust. I must admit there are many more. I am still trying to figure out where to buy my ticket to board the Hogwarts Express. Still looking for lamp post in the back of my closet. I think I need to buy a wardrobe for my spare room. I would love to join a fellowship in Rivendell or at least see a Hobbit hole in New Zealand. Or drink sweet tea on the porch at Tara. The list goes on and on.
Do you have any places you would love to travel to based on books? Real or not?
